Past Elements Future Icons

Julie Vulcan
1989

5 video monitors, 1 slide projection, 5 found glass objects
Duration: ranges from aprox 9:30 to 20:00min each on loop
Video/sound: Julie Vulcan

The video monitors and slide projection are installed throughout 3 spaces in the gallery. The monitors arranged variously on their backs, sides, up high or at eye level. Each video has its own original soundtrack, complementing and building on the other, while acting as a lure through the space.

The slow moving images draw on the rich association of the four traditional elements unified by a fifth. Each image layers a part of the artist’s body, a glass object and a rich constructed texture. In one video a fragmented sky is filmed reflected in broken mirrors, a translucent glass jar appears to hold the air while a supine body slowly fades into the image before disappearing like a cloud. In another, richly textured layers of dark and red hues seem to shift and move, while offering glimpses of hands surrounding a visceral object. The video works continued the artist’s interest in creating gradually shifting and layered compositions that considered the augmentation of time and the illusion of movement.
