-empyre- is a global community of new media artists, curators, theorists, producers, and others who participate in monthly thematic discussions via an e-mail listserv.

-empyre- facilitates online discussion encouraging critical perspectives on contemporary cross-disciplinary issues, practices and events in networked media. The list is currently co-managed by Renate Ferro (USA) and Tim Murray (USA) with the moderating team of Simon Biggs (UK), and Patrick Lichty (USA). Melinda Rackham (AU) initiated -empyre- as part of her doctoral research in 2002.

ANAT was incorporated in 1988, but started life in 1984 as an art and technology event titled ‘Interface’ which was developed by the Experimental Art Foundation for the Adelaide Festival . This led to a research‐based pilot project initiated by the Experimental Art Foundation and the South Australian Ministry of Technology in 1985, and funded primarily through the Commonwealth Employment Program.

Artspace opened the gallery doors of its first premises in Surry Hills in 1983. From that moment on Artspace has supported critical and experimental practices across media and cultures. Artspace moved to its present location at the Gunnery Building in Woolloomooloo in 1992. A few years later Artspace initiated a local and international residency program, significantly expanded at the beginning of 2007. Artspace has been a regular venue for the Biennale of Sydney from 1993 onwards.

Between the late 1970s and mid-1980s the mainstream art world began to take notice of works being produced by Aboriginal artists. Initially the focus centred upon the acrylic ‘dot paintings’ coming out of Western Desert communities in the Northern Territory such as Papunya, and the bark paintings of Arnhem Land.
