Artist Run Initiative

First Draft was incorporated in 1985 as a non-profit, artist managed organisation and established in 1986 with seed funding from the Australia Council. Every two years a new group of directors is selected to administer First Draft. It is expected that the directors are themselves practising artists. The turnover of directors provides the opportunity for a reformation of the way the gallery functions and provides the possibility for new approaches to the style of artwork it shows. This gallery, in its third relocation since its inception, is now located in premises in Surry Hills, Sydney.

Artist Run Initiative

Imperial Slacks artist collective was formed in Sydney to continue the running of the renamed Herringbone Gallery as Imperial Slacks (2000-2002). A significant number of artists working with video were part of this collective, including Angelica Mesiti, Shaun Gladwell, The Kingpins, Wade Marynowsky, Michael Schiavello, Alex Davies and Monika Tichacek. They also collaborated to mount the exhibition WORK, REST, PLAY (ESCAPE) at Artspace 2004. The work is often characterized by a mixing of media, where video is one element within the work presented.

Artist Run Initiative

Established in 2002, Lanfranchi’s was an artist-run space located in Chippendale. Over a period of four years it ran as a dedicated studio and performance space for a diverse collective of musicians, visual, sound and new media artists, as well as writers, journalists, arts workers and music publishers. In this time, the space hosted many established and emerging artists from interstate and overseas.

Artist Run Initiative

MOP is an artist-run initiative (ARI) that annually programs up to 35 exhibitions at its Chippendale gallery premises. A volunteer committee curates MOP’s programming based on an ever-growing pool of proposals and initiatives developed in-house. Since its inception in 2003, MOP's key programming rationale has been to act as a career springboard for young and emerging artists. In recent years MOP has been addressing the changing and growing nature of ARIs by also supporting mid-career artists who resist or do not have the benefit of commercial representation.
