Artist Collective

Inhibodress was an important artist-run space in Sydney in 1971-72, set up by Mike Parr, Peter Kennedy and Tim Johnson and showed mostly conceptual work. The idea for the gallery was initiated by Mike Parr when he called a meeting in August 1970 to establish an artists’ run space that would focus on installation and conceptual art.

Otherfilm is a collective based in Brisbane, Australia, dedicated to avant-garde, experimental, abstract, expanded and other film. We express this dedication through regular screening programs, performance events, exhibitions, workshops, articles, research, discussions and arguments. OtherFilm has created programs for Melbourne International Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival, Liquid Architecture, The NowNow, LadyFest, SOOB, Stream Collective, Whitehouse Gallery, The State Library of Queensland, The Institute of Modern Art and other festivals and institutions.

Queensland’s leading Indigenous arts collective, proppaNOW, was set up in Brisbane in 2003 to give urban-based Aboriginal artists a voice. They present a unique and controversial perspective of black Australia which is sometimes confronting and always thought provoking.

The Ubu Film Group emerged in Sydney in 1965. Initiated by Albie Thoms, David Perry and Aggy Read, Ubu was pivotal for the ndevelopment of underground film iand independent cinema. This group evolved into the Sydney Fillmmakers Co-op in the late 1960s.

ACAB attempt to rethink human actions and impulses: for instance, rather than attempting control over our environmental fate, the human hand could choose to act as a catalyst for change. An environmental crisis for one organism might be the next big break for another (as an asteroid was for the dinosaurs). Their practice uses material exploration to contextualise these changes and is an attempt towards a crucible for positive change. Through synthesis of accumulated materials and the play of light; our works aim to activate this change in perception.

Artist collective working in various anonymous and interventionist guises during the 1980s. Infamously inserted video cut-ups at the end of rented movies from video rental stores on Oxford Stree Sydney, to be randomly viewed by audiences who hired the tape and made it all the way to the end of the commercially-recorded program. Members of the group included John Jacobs.

Cicada is a creative partnership between Melbourne-based media artists Kirsten Bradley and Nick Ritar. They create immersive environments, exploring interactions between projection, audio and everyday spaces. Working with the textures and ambience of existing architectural structures, Cicada create works that re-enliven and celebrate public space. Cicada’s output manifests as a combination of real-time audiovisual performance, video design and performance for music and theatre.

For Soda_Jerk, the practice of reconfiguring the collective archive provides a concrete means of troubling the record of history. VNS Matrix was an artist collective founded in Adelaide in 1991 by Josephine Starrs, Julianne Pierce, Francesca da Rimini and Virginia Barratt. They presented several installations, events and public art works in Australia and internationally, working with new media, photography, sound and video. They were among the first artists to coin the term 'cyberfeminism' in the early 1990's and released the 'Cyberfeminist Manifesto for the 21st Century' in 1991.
