After many promises, Barack Obama has still not made a visit to Australia and Absence responds to this in a most simple but provocative way. To a soundtrack of Obama’s voice we see empty Canberra streets instead of the President’s motorcade and the House of Representatives devoid of human presence. The disembodied voice of Obama addresses no-one. Obama’s ‘speech’ is in fact a very clever editing together of various voice grabs of the President.

[You are not here] is a video momento mori to the artist’s Grandmother; a symbolic representation of memory and an invitation for an audience to engage and meditate alongside the artist’s personal history and nostalgic sentiment. In the work, the photographic image belonging to the artist is eroded - both metaphorically and physically - to simulate the cycles of life as sacred and perpetual happenings. It is the in-between-space that acts as a joint meditation, which creates a relationship between the artist and viewer.

Apology to Roadkill is part of a series of works that meditate upon the well-known Australian films Mad Max I and Mad Max II. It was included in Shaun Gladwell’s presentation in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (2009) among a suite of video and sculptural objects that also referenced these quintessential Australian films.

In a sequence of silent, improvisational fragments, a camera observes a swimming pool from the 17th floor of a hotel in Miami. Nothing specific is revealed. In the blurred movement of the swimmers, the distinction between body and water is dissolved, as contour and shape are transformed into an animated blot or stain.

Assembly observes a morning ritual of prayer and movement, performed by primary school students. The children move in time: expressing themselves with their arms, hands and faces. The children move in response to 'reflection exercises' being read out from prayer cards that are used daily in the Australian Catholic primary school system.
