True to her name, in recent years Destiny Deacon has blazed an extraordinary trail. Since first exhibiting at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, in 1991, Deacon has been represented in the prestigious international exhibitions Documenta, the Yokohama Triennale, the first Johannesburg Biennale and the fifth Havanna Biennale, as well as the Biennale of Sydney and Brisbane's Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Like Tracey Moffatt, she is one of the few Australian artists to have established an international audience.

Broadly speaking, the girltron series examines robots as subjects of culture, and perceptions people have of machines; with particular emphasis on how we personalise technology, and how these interactions make us feel.

girltron 1.0 is photographic documentation of 3d mixed media sculptures, or conceptual characters I created which incorporate styles of robots and dolls that inspired me during my childhood.

'Dolls are silent reminders of childhood, but Deacon gives voice to her dolls by communicating feelings… these dolls are decapitated, amputated or contorted, thereby becoming animated and expressive characters in Deacon's psychodramas. In doing so, they confront prejudice and inequality in their inimitable way.'
